Job Description

This company provides various services to the short-term insurance industry, including computer systems and services. The systems process over a billion Rand of premium a year.
The customer base is varied and includes large national brokers and many independent brokers.
The IT department has about forty staff members who support the various phases of the software development life cycle. Developers focus on system design, programming and maintenance. Other IT specialists handle project management, functional requirements specifications, parameterisation, testing, customer interaction, training, operations and hardware support.
All user interaction is via the Internet (Browser-based). The system includes insurance policy administration, claims and accounting modules.
We would now like to appoint another business analyst.
1.1 Duties & Responsibilities
  • Liaise/consult with stakeholders (internal staff and customers) to elicit requirements and document business needs;
  • Clearly articulates and documents business and functional requirements;
  • Coordinates project delivery by participating in design reviews and walk-throughs to communicate systems designs and validate proposed solutions;
  • Lead review meetings with other team members;
  • Track and resolve design issues;
  • Obtain sign-off of the specification;
  • Participate in testing (“BA review”) once the solution has been developed.

Open plan office, occasional overtime, local travelling to customers and out-of-town travel (on rare occasions)

2.1 Qualification & Education
Essential / Minimum requirementsPreferred qualifications
At least one of the following:
  • Formal training in business analysis, business process analysis and related;
  • University degree with subjects related to business and information technology;
  • Some formal qualification related to short-term insurance, e.g. an insurance course or programme from Unisa’s Centre for Business Management (CBM), or a certificate from Milpark Education, both overseen by the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA);
2.2 Working Experience
Essential / Minimum requirementsPreferred experience
  • At least two years hands-on working experience in the financial services industry, with good user knowledge of a relevant IT system;
  • Skill and experience in analysing business requirements and writing specifications in the financial services industry;
  • Prior experience in process analysis and documentation of business processes, templates and detailed operational procedures.
Exposure to a financial system, preferably related to short-term insurance; 

2.3 Technical competencies
Essential / Minimum requirementsPreferred competencies
  • PC literacy (Including excellent knowledge of MS Office and Visio);
  • A basic understanding of databases and financial transaction processing systems;
  • Knowledge of formal methodologies to analyse business requirements and processes
  • Solid understanding of the software development life cycle;
  • Demonstrated ability to interview end users;
  • Good understanding of short-term insurance products and rating methodologies;
