Job Description

Business Intelligence Database Developer Position
A position exists within the Health Intelligence Unit (HIU) for a specialist Business Intelligence (BI) Database Developer. 

HIU makes use of clinical and statistical insight combined with predictive modelling to provide business decision support. Various statistical models built in-house by means of statistical techniques ranging from regression to cluster analysis is used to elicit information from data. The field of work is initially going to be in the area of HIV risk management with a SQL Server source system and much of the BI solution based in SQL Server. Data is also sourced from an Oracle data warehouse and other external data sources. Some solutions are developed in Oracle.
The role is to develop business intelligence solutions, in particular to (i) develop key management metrics, (ii) manage and integrate the associated data, (iii) derive information from data and (iv) facilitate the interpretation and reporting of this information back to stakeholders. In brief, the incumbent must be passionate about transforming data into information with the goal of improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of healthcare.
The working environment is office based, with an emphasis on (i) sourcing, managing and interpreting data from healthcare information systems and (ii) liaising with clinical, information technology (IT) and business people to reach consensus on metrics and methodologies. The offices are located in The Boulevard Office Complex, Searle Street, Cape Town.
Job description:
 Work systematically with large amounts of data primarily in Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle databases with a focus on transforming the source data into useful data models and ultimately information.
 Routinely and reliably making data available to the front-end team for further analysis and interpretation.
 Systematically source and integrate external data into appropriate databases.
 Take initiative to identify and automate elements of routine reporting where possible.
 Create technical specification documents and design processes and data flow diagrams.
 Develop key indicators and multidimensional summaries to facilitate the assessment of interventions.
 Liaise with clinical and IT staff and management to ensure that necessary data is identified, where necessary procured, quality assured and integrated into the reporting systems.
 Assist with the management of database jobs and the organisation of objects in databases.
 Conduct code reviews and participate in technical design as a member of a cross-functional team.
 Contribute to effective data governance. This includes data quality, data management, data policies, business process management, and risk management surrounding the handling of business data.
Key skills required:
 Degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, mathematics, statistics or life sciences.
 Relevant work experience with a proven track record of developing business intelligence / monitoring and evaluation solutions.
Preference given to:
 An honours degree or higher or a relevant professional BI certification.
 Experience with development of business intelligence solutions in the healthcare environment, particularly in terms of monitoring and evaluating managed care programmes and wellness interventions.
 Experience with data management, the design of data models and good SQL coding and tuning skills.
 The ability to automate data management tasks and ETL processes using SSIS.
 Experience with report design and deployment using Microsoft solutions including dynamic Excel, SharePoint and PowerPivot. Experience developing SharePoint sites advantageous.
 Experience managing BI projects and communicating priorities and timelines.
