Job Description

Key Responsibilities 

Reporting into the Development Manager Business Intelligence, this role is responsible for the Information Delivery team. The key objective of the Information Delivery team is to develop and maintain the Enterprise Data-warehouse by Extracting, Transforming and Loading data from various databases into the Enterprise Data-warehouse. The role requires an understanding of the capability and methods used to collect process and store large data volumes from multiple systems. Responsibilities include overseeing of ETL Developers, standby, standards, metadata and day-to-day operations of the Information Delivery Team.

Discipline Specific Output / Task

  • Manages the development phase on a project team.
  • Communicates with clients in terms of requirements
  • Responsible for estimates for implementing requirements
  • Provides design and development support and assistance to other team members
  • Provides assistance up and down the information delivery chain when required.
  • Advises and provides recommendations on appropriate solutions
  • Reviews design and development work of team members and ensure the adherence to standards, principles and methodologies
  • Ensures team compliance to Information Management& policies and procedures
  • Escalates non-compliance issues for final resolution
  • Responsible for ensuring that business specifications have been met by the systems/data design and development
  • Conduct peer reviews of Solution Design and Code
  • Ensures documentation of system/data problems and resolutions for future reference
  • Ensures the maintenance of technical metadata
  • Working with modelling tools and data repository to maintain artefacts
  • Determines the impact of source systems and solutions to the Data-warehouse
  • Oversees the design of logical and physical data models in the Warehouse
  • Ensure that data models are maintained at multiple levels of detail and functionality (Logical, relational, dimensional etc.)
  • Liaises with the IT Architects on matters of architectural application
  • Overseas design and development of ETL process, including data quality and testing
  • Liaises with Developers, Systems Analysts and Business Analysts to ensure that the specifications are understood
  • Identifies potential risks/issues and provides inputs into risk plan
  • Collaborates with Users and Related teams but possesses persuasion and negotiation skills and uses them in a tactful and diplomatic fashion.
  • Integrates the potentially diverse needs of many users and stakeholders and successfully manages varying perspectives
  • Customizes presentations to the interests of the audience
  • Communicates with senior management with an intent to persuade – such as to invest in a new technology, adopt a new direction for a process or project
  • Forms productive relationships with internal and external clients and the vendor community
  • Works independently, often taking a role to provide guidance and provide technical expertise and support the team, will refer to appropriate peer level stakeholders as a sounding board to ensure consideration of wider factors and external impacts
  • Proposes alternative approaches/frameworks for developers
  • Decides on allocation of activities of the team and manages delivery
  • Assesses quality of the data model design and decides on implementation
  • Assesses quality of the business requirement specifications and makes appropriate recommendations
  • Decides on sequencing of activities and prioritisation
  • Analyses at solution level
  • Develops plans that anticipate and proactively address roadblocks and obstacles
  • Conducts complete diagnosis of most business problems, factoring in a strong understanding of the data architecture
  • Facilitates problem solving and resolution sessions by pulling together key experts, presenting logical statements of business problems and designs, and offering and incorporating ideas

Additional Responsibilities

  • Evening and weekend work in response to needs of the systems being supported or ad-hoc project requirements
  • Manage after-hours and weekend standby and support 
Minimuim Requirements 


  • Relevant Tertiary IT qualification e.g. BCom (Information Systems) or BSc (Computer Science)
  • Certificate or diploma in data warehousing from industry recognised training institution will be an advantage but not essential
  • At least 10 years of IT experience of which 5 years spent within a data warehouse environment
  • Ability to Lead a team of ETL Developers, make technical decisions and explain alternatives
  • Good understanding of business, systems and data analysis
  • Excellent experience with investigating data queries and giving feedback
  • Experience in ETL development and testing
  • Good understanding of various databases and system platforms
  • Excellent experience with physical database modelling and database design
  • Experience in the financial/insurance industry will be an advantage


  • Technically strong in ETL concept & design
  • Solid experience with database query tools
  • Expert knowledge of information security and data exchange
  • Sound knowledge of IT System Development Life Cycles (SDLC) & agile methodology
  • Experienced in Information Risk Management and Data architecture & design
  • Advanced understanding of data and process modelling tools
  • Expert knowledge of data modelling (Dimensional, conceptual, logical, relational etc.) techniques and tools


  • Excellent Data-warehousing knowledge
  • Industry best practice knowledge for data modelling, coding (ETL) and technical warehouse solutions and tools
  • Sound knowledge of IT Systems Development Life Cycles (SDLC), including Agile methodologies
  • Knowledge of the following will be an advantage:
