Head of Infrastructure and ICT Operations

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS POSITION

The primary purpose of the role is to plan and coordinate the design, installation, and connectivity of computer systems and network infrastructure to ensure the stable operation of the orginsations IT assets. This includes the developing, configuring, maintaining, supporting and optimising all new and existing hardware, software, communication links, telephony, data centre, security systems and other infrastructure.

OVERSEE IT DEPARTMENT
  • Manage IT staff by recruiting, training and coaching employees, communicating job expectations and appraising their performance
  • Monitor and guide the IT department in performing their tasks
helpdesk
  • Oversee all helpdesk activity
  • Respond to escalated help desk issues
  • Interact with internal clients at all levels to help resolve IT related issues and provide answers in a timely mannner
VENDOR
MANAGEMENT
  • Establish strong partnerships with Vendors
  • Set clear expectations
  • Establish service level agreements and measure vendors against these
  • Ensure contracts are in place to support the services provided by the Infrastructure team
NETWORKING
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of additions and deletions to the network infrastructure
  • Oversee the administration and maintanence of the companies network infrastructure including WAN
  • Implement network security
  • Monitor network to ensure network functionality and availability to all system users
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair cabled, wireless and other network infrastructure
project management
  • Complete projects by coordinating resources and timetables
  • Ensure projects are managed against a plan
  • May be required to provide input in other IT related projects
Internal SYSTEMS
  • Manage Information Technology and computer systems
  • Oversee troubleshooting, system backups, archiving , disaster recovery and provide expert support as needed
  • Work with project teams to help enhance internal systems
  • Plan, organise, control and evaluate IT and electronic data operations
  • Ensure end users are trained on how to utilise computer systems
ESTABLISH STANDARDS & PROCEDURES
  • Design, develop, implement and coordinate systems, policies and procedures
  • Maintain quality service by establishing and enforcing organization standards
  • Establish standard ways of working to ensure technical teams work together in a consistent manner
STRATEGY
  • Identify problematic areas and implement strategic solutions in time
  • Maintain the company’s effectiveness and efficiency by defining, delivering, and supporting strategic plans for implementing information technologies.
  • Direct technological research by understanding the goals, practices, strategies and projects of the company
  • Accomplish financial objectives by forecasting requirements, preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective action
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking state-of-the-art practices, participating in professional societies
MONITORING & REPORTING
  • Audit systems and assess their outcomes
  • Maintain local and server based anti-virus software.
  • Inform and train users and management on how to adhere to global and local security ICT policies
  • In case of virus infection clean out affected equipment
  • Ensuring daily health checks are being conducted to maintain a proactive monitoring of the environment
Infrastructure SOFTWARE
  • Provide software and system troubleshooting and support
  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and update operating systems and user applications.
  • Proactively schedule software upgrades and patching
  • Ensure that all software is licensed and keep record of licenses
  • Track license and support contracts to include notification of renewal timeframe to management
  • Ensure the right software and tools are in place to manage the infrastructure.
Telephony
  • Manage and develop upgrades to the telephone system
  • Oversee all telephone changes
asset management
  • Build and maintains vendor relationships and manage the purchase of hardware and software products.
  • Ensure the company assets are maintained responsibly.

  • Proven working experience as an IT operations manager or relevant experience
  • Excellent knowledge of technical management, information analysis and of computer hardware/software systems
  • Hands-on experience with computer networks, network administration and network installation
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting hardware such as servers, routers,  switches, hubs, modems, network interface cards, and so on

  • Need to be intimately familiar with technologies such as Microsoft, Cisco, VMWare
  • Excellent knowledge of current protocols and standards, including Active Directory, Group Policies, MS Exchange, Core Switching/Routing, SSL/IPSec, SAN, Virtualization, Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery
  • 5 years of experience managing and configuring enterprise-wide LANs, WANs, WLANs, VPNs, etc.
  • 2 years successful leadership of an infrastructure team
 
Qualifications
  • Bcom Computer Science, Diploma in IT or similar
  • Certifications in server, network, IT governance and project management will be an added advantage
