Job Description

Senior Database Administrator position

Description

The successful incumbent will be responsible for the effective implementation, maintenance and repair of all databases (South Africa, United Kingdom, Mauritius and Third Party hosted database environments), monitoring and improving database optimization and capacity, assist in planning for future expansion requirements, coordinate and implement security measures to safeguard the databases. The focus of the role will primarily be on OLTP, including performance management; and secondly, assisting with the effective design and development as well as the coordinating and communicating of deployments to production.


Requirements

Key Performance Areas:

 

Database Administration and Design

  • Responsible for the installation, configuration, upgrade, administration, monitoring and maintenance of complex database environments, including SQL mirroring, replication and log shipping
  • Facilitate the best possible system performance from the perspective of the applications and reports on the database
  • Service any data movement requests securely, accurately and timeously
  • Set up new database environments and configure in adherence with applications
  • Maintain the security of data at all times

 

SQL monitoring and performance optimization

  • Monitor SQL Server and ensure monitoring tools are in alignment with business KPAs
  • Identifies poorly performing SQL code, i.e. stored procedures, function etc.
  • Investigate problematic code and suggest code improvements

 

Deployment planning, execution and roll back plan

  • Maintain change control methodology and amend operating procedures as deployment life cycle changes
  • Timeous implementation and communication of deployment schedule
  • Implement deployments and rollbacks considering impact and interdependencies

 

Business continuity planning

  • Disaster recovery design, planning, setup and configuration including database restoration, mirroring, availability group configuration, application configuration and testing

Operational incidents

  • Resolve existing operational incidents timeously and correctly
  • Provide an efficient 3rd line support and assists with database related queries
  • Document and accurately update SOP and escalating processes
  • Ensure that Incident management is adhered to in accordance with (ITIL)

 

Qualification:

  • Tertiary qualification In Information Technology
  • MCDBA, MCSA:SQL Server and/or MCSE: Data platform would be advantageous

Experience: 

  • Minimum of 8 years’ MS SQL Database Administrator

Functional Competencies:

  • Advanced knowledge of MS SQL Server 2008 up until SQL 2016
  • SQL integration services
  • SQL mirroring, replication and log shipping
  • SQL security
  • Experience working with large databases (+100GB)
  • SQL high availability and disaster recovery technologies
  • SQL backup and restore configuration and planning
  • Change control processes and procedures
