Job Description

Educational requirements:

  • National Diploma or Degree in Metallurgy/Chemical Engineering or related discipline
  • Business Management qualification will be advantageous (MDP / MBL / MBA)

Previous experience

  • Smelter experience at mid-management level
  • Experience in practical project development and implementation exposure
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate and conduct research of production processes and problems
  • Experience in managing medium to large projects in smelting furnace operation
  • Relevant experience on submerged arc furnaces and / or converter operation


  • First Aid
  • Safety Training


  • Driving safety leadership
  • Ability to develop and implement work procedures for smelter operation
  • Proven knowledge of applicable safety, health and environmental principles and procedures
  • Knowledge of quality awareness principles and procedures and corrective actions to be taken to achieve metal specifications
  • Detailed understanding of the total production process flow
  • Understanding of teamwork principles 
  • High computer literacy using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Strong sense of accuracy, attention to details, analysis and administrative skills
  • Ability to maintain discipline in a sustainable manner
  • Customer service orientation
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Adaptability to changing work environment and continuously aligning performance for success
  • Highly focused on continuous improvements of the production processes and systems
  • Show initiative and high self motivation levels
  • Will be required to perform stand by duties
  • Must have own vehicle and valid driver’s license
  • Must be in possession of a valid C.O.F


  • Plan, lead, organize and control of work to be carried out in the area of responsibility in accordance with standard operating procedures
  • Continually identify opportunities for improvement and maintenance of best practice, operating system to world class standards
  • Develop and maintain operating procedures
  • Develop own project plan within the Departmental Projects implemented within area of responsibility
  • Ensure compliance all work procedures relating to Safety, Health and Environment
  • Act as a resource for the professional development of supervisors, and trainee metallurgists
